A colourful project by Wilson Architects was nominated as a finalist in the Commercial & Multi Residential Exterior category at the 2019 Dulux Colour Awards.
The 300-bed student accommodation building on the James Cook University Cairns campus encourages a positive and engaging student experience.
Contemporary interpretations of the region’s distinctive architecture ‘The Queenslander’, have inspired the unique and inviting character of the student housing development. Taking reference from the coloured glazing to the enclosed 1920s Queenslander veranda sleep-outs this element is reinterpreted as colourful bands that can be read from the outside and interior. This device creates a dynamic backdrop within the landscaped courtyard space and as a wayfinding strategy.
Colour selections were inspired by the projects unique location, where the tropical rainforests of the Far North Region meets with the Great Barrier Reef. The building enables opportunities for student interactions from the individual, through small living groups, to larger scale communities, living and learning together on campus.
The central courtyard space connects all of the communal living and study spaces while being intimate enough to provide a domestic focus. The octagon scheme offers views from every room, either to distant water views or mountain/forest views. The octagon shaped building creates a residual central safe courtyard which belongs to this student community, offering layers of varied socially inclusive spaces. The student accommodation building is scaled to set a precedence for a compact urban environment moving forward, but one with strong integration and connection to the Tropical landscape.
